I'm competitive, though I don't really show it. Internally, I'm always measuring myself, pushing for more.

For years, I compared myself to other advisors and other business owners. Sometimes it motivated me. More often, it just made me feel bad.

Now I try to compete with who I was last year instead.

Has our practice grown in ways that matter? Am I a better advisor than I was 12 months ago? Are we helping clients in ways we couldn't before?

This feels way healthier. When you're always looking around to see who's ahead, you lose focus on what you're actually trying to build.

Same thing happens with investing. Clients want to know how they're doing compared to their neighbour or some index they read about.

But real wealth building isn't about beating someone else's returns. It's about making consistent progress toward your own goals.

Are you more secure than last year? Building wealth that supports the life you want? Making progress on what actually matters to you?

That kind of competition keeps you focused on what you can control.

Send me a message if you want to talk about building a wealth plan that's designed around your definition of success.
